ROUTE

No one thought it could be done. But in 1904 David Moffat proved them all wrong. Working with the Denver Northwestern Railroad, he succeeded in the construction of a railway over Rollins Pass between the plains of Denver & the town of Winter Park.

Non-believers called it "Hell Hill."

The rail line's long gone & it's famous summit tunnel, Eye of the Needle is closed due to unsafe rockfall. But the route still exists and is a crown in the Boulder epic riding circuit. While it's no longer referred to as "Hell Hill," it's still an admirable feat to bike over the pass with great rewards on the backside.

In classic Bikerpelli style, we'll start Friday AM at the Moffat tunnel (elev ~9000) and climb to lunch just east of the Needle's Eye tunnel (elev ~11,600). After a healthy feeding, cross over and explore some of the hidden gems on the backside descent, including the aptly-named Broken Thumb singletrack, a great technical option for more advanced riders. Or take the casual Moffat Road descent to our camp for the nite where we'll have your dinner waiting.

Our second day is built to order according to you - explore the extensive 600 mi Winter Park & Fraser trail network on your own & choose the routes that excite you. Or roll down to the resort & take the ski lift up the mtn for a day of downhill - ski lift up, two wheels down. Or any combination of the two, again it's up to you. We'll provide the support, you pick the challenge. Trade stories with the others around our campfire again that nite & sleep deeply under the brightest stars you'll ever see.

Our last day we pedal back over Rollin's Pass, an easier ascent from the western side. After an aid station up top, either take the scenic cruise down the classic route or buckle up for the challenge of the Jenny Creek descent. whichever your route, we'll meet you at the bottom with a BBQ celebration of a great challenge conquered and a milestone you'll be proud of.

Like all Bikerpelli trips, the cycling is only half the fun. There's a certain energy that comes from sharing a great route with 60 of your new best friends. You're guaranteed to meet plenty of like-minded riders while you sip a post-ride beer around our fire. Bikerpelli trips are more than a ride, they're a community & an experience you won't forget.

As one rider put it, "One of the things that makes it so great is the participants. This is a true slice of the mountain biking community pie. You'll have every fitness and skill level covered, and if you're not coming out with a friend, you'll find one at the check-in line. Just a bunch of people that love mountain biking, and one of the best trails in the country to share it with them."

Because of its many options and laid-back nature, this route appeals to both intermediate & advanced riders and is a great intro to our trips. Plus it's perfect for getting your significant other out - since he's not half the biker you are - and lets you share your cycling passion without pounding him into the ground!

As an MTB route, Rollin's Pass is a moderate course accessible to riders of any skill level provided they have adequate fitness to pedal 20+ miles per day and do well at high altitudes.

Total minimum mileage - 44 (about 22 per day)

Avg mileage - around 60-75
Max mileage - unlimited!
